About Ergon
Ergon History
Ergon publishing house was founded in 1989 by Dr. Hans-Jürgen Dietrich, leading off with a publication on the subject "Gardens" - a richly illustrated book bringing together studies which represented the different scholarly fields at the University of Würzburg. In the following year, Ergon started its fruitful cooperation with the "Rückert Gesellschaft e.V.". This cooperation meant an important impulse to the future outline of the Ergon publishing program. The first scientific book series were initiated, with the emphasis on oriental and literary studies, then. Of outstanding importance for the development of Ergon was the publication of Friedrich Rückert’s translation of the "Koran", brilliantly edited by Hartmut Bobzin and Wolfdietrich Fischer, in 1995. In numerous press reviews (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Süddeutsche Zeitung et al.) Rückert’s translation was described as a "masterpiece of German literature". One of the great supporters of this publication was Annemarie Schimmel, who was awarded the "Peace Prize of the German Book Trade" ("Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels"), in the same year.
Publishing Program
While in the beginning the Ergon publishing program had its emphasis on Oriental and Literary Studies, it has widely extended its scope to other areas of the Humanities and Sociological Studies. Thus, Ergon is one of the few publishers making interdisciplinary studies of reputable scientific institutions, societies, Collaborative Research Centres (Sonderforschungsbereiche) and institutes accessible to the public. Ergon book series cover the fields of Philosophy, Political Science, Jurisprudence, Pedagogics, Sociology, Psychology, Oriental Studies, Literary Studies, Information- and Library Sciences, Art and Antiquity. In the last years, the publishing program was complemented by series dedicated to Religious Studies and Sociology of Religion All of these series are published under the editorial guidance of researchers and scientists of high reputation. Ergon also publishes high-quality art books and exhibition catalogues of bibliophile get-up, which is guaranteed by the in-house typesetting and layout department. The publishing experience and the scope of the program of Ergon Verlag are, inter alia, characterized by the close collaboration and partnering with the following scientific institutions and societies rich in tradition:
