The book discusses the relationship of personal identity and communication. In particular, the role of the mass media is addressed. Theoretical perspectives of general sociology, cultural sociology and the sociology of the mass media are applied. Amongst others, the author discusses the relationship of person and role, the theory of the looking glass self, the connection between cultural systems of meaning and the identity of the person, individualization and societal differentiation, persons and identity as a subject of mass communication as well as the constitution and modification of personal identity via mass media consumption. In addition, aspects of national and ethnic identities, global network identities, national and global mechanisms of selection and copy are analysed and linked with the theory of the world society. Against this background, points of intersection between sociology, philosophy and psychology are worked out as well.The work was originally conducted as a dissertation for the degree of a philosophical doctor and awarded with the ‘Förderpreis’ of the ‘Freundeskreis der Universität Trier e.V.
