In its first part, this study gives an overview of the history of Islamization in East Africa until the end of the colonial era. The second and main part describes the post-colonial situation of Muslims in the present states Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi: their ethnic and religious affiliation, their geographical spreading, social status and economic importance as well as their political and cultural influence.
