Kartoniert
The present volume, the third one in the series "Identitäten und Alteritäten" (at the same time the first volume in the Classics subseries), contains the papers (revised for publication) which were given at a congress on the topic "Identität und Alterität in der frührömischen Tragödie". The meeting, in which scholars from several different countries participated, took place in Freiburg i. Br. (Germany) in November 1999; it was organised in connection with the special research project bearing the title "Identitäten und Alteritäten. Die Funktion von Alterität für die Konstitution und Konstruktion von Identität" (Sonderforschungsbereich 541). Within the framework of the project's general ideas the congress chose as its aim to explore the special characteristics of early Roman tragedies with regard to their relationship to Greek ones. The different approaches and methods used opened up the possibility of looking at the problem of the individuality of early Roman tragedy from different points of view. This multiplicity is mirrored by the essays collected in this volume. The contributions are divided into two groups. The first part of the volume deals with more general questions central to Roman republican tragedy and also for the related genre of the praetexta. Topics such as the beginnings of Roman tragedy, the religious character of the pieces, the relevance of the preferred subject matter, the organization of the productions or the impact of the tragedies in later periods are looked at. Against this background the volume's second part offers interpretations of selected pieces (i.e. the preserved fragments) of all important Roman tragedians of the Republican era: Livius Andronicus, Naevius, Ennius, Pacuvius, Accius. The analyses, each of them emphasising special aspects, lead to a deeper understanding of the texts, some of which have been dealt with rather seldom up to now. On the whole a many-sided picture of the special and common characteristics of the individual dramatists emerges; it elucidates the specific quality of early Roman tragedies and praetextae.
