Die Wahrheit wird in Alfred North Whiteheads metaphysischem Hauptwerk "Process and Reality" (1929), einem philosophischen Schlüsselwerk des 20. Jahrhunderts, ambivalent bewertet. Wahrheit ist einerseits für jegliche Erkenntnis, und so insbesondere auch für Philosophie und Wissenschaft, ein Grundwert; andererseits wird sie im weltgeschichtlichen Geschehen weitgehend von anderen Interessen als Einflussfaktoren verdrängt, was Whitehead in seiner Kosmologie metaphysisch systematisch zu berücksichtigen versucht. Dazu wird die Wahrheit mit der göttlichen Weisheit als letztlicher Steuerung des kosmischen Geschehens in Zusammenhang gebracht. Dabei bleiben aber wichtige Fragen der Metaphysik ungeklärt. Diesem Problem ist der erste Teil der Untersuchung gewidmet. Im zweiten Teil wird versucht, Whiteheads Metaphysik im Hinblick auf diese Problematik mit den entsprechenden philosophischen bzw. theologischen Problemen in den beiden Enzykliken "Fides et ratio" und "Veritatis splendor" von Papst Johannes Paul II. zu konfrontieren. Da Whiteheads Philosophie zum platonischen Typ von Philosophie gehört, wird in der Einleitung die Wahrheitstradition mit ihrem Ursprung in der antiken platonischen Philosophie einschließlich des von Augustinus zuerst begrifflich systematisch ausgearbeiteten christlichen Platonismus zusammenfassend dargestellt. On the one hand truth is a basic and ultimate metaphysical value for cognition, and generally for prehension, on the other "in the real world it is more important that a proposition be interesting than that it be true" (op. cit. 1979, p. 259). In Whitehead's attempt to harmonize both aspects the primordial wisdom of God with God's vision of truth, beauty, and goodness plays the decisive role in leading the cosmos to its everlasting final completion. The conceptual reconciliation of this ambivalence in Whitehead's "philosophy of organism" is but incomplete. So the first part of the book is dedicated to this problem. The second part shows how truth and wisdom are considered in two encyclicals of Pope John Paul II, namely in "Fides et ratio" and "Splendor veritatis", and how the Pope's doctrine relates to the solutions in Whitehead's metaphysics.
